Mechanisms underlying lack of functional compensation by insect grazers after tadpole declines in a Neotropical stream

چکیده

Abstract Resilience of ecosystems to the sudden decline large‐bodied species is dependent on characteristics surviving guild members. However, that response may also be mediated by local habitat conditions. Here, we examine mechanisms behind observed lack functional compensation in algal‐grazing insect grazers following tadpole a forested Panamanian stream. We examined: (1) shifts individual size distribution between pre‐ and post‐tadpole declines pool riffle habitats; (2) preferences for small‐, medium‐, large‐sized diatoms; (3) causal explanation why insects did not functionally compensate declines. The differed habitats, becoming uniform pools more right skewed toward smaller class riffles. In both tadpoles selectively consumed medium‐sized diatoms but avoided largest‐sized diatoms. contrast, grazing small‐sized diatoms, switched after Tadpole led loss strongest interactions consumers Smaller‐bodied could duplicate these interactions, even with shift resource use, providing an compensation. Furthermore, different community structures each indicating conditions This suggests does lead singular outcome community.

Lack of functional link in the tadpole morphology induced by predators

Most studies of predator-induced plasticity have focused on documenting how prey species respond to predators by modifying phenotypic traits and how traits correlate with fitness. We have previously shown that Pleurodema thaul tadpoles exposed to the dragonfly Rhionaeschna variegata responded strongly by showing morphological changes, less activity, and better survival than non-exposed tadpoles...

Mechanisms underlying the promotion of functional recovery by deferoxamine after spinal cord injury in rats

Deferoxamine, a clinically safe drug used for treating iron overload, also repairs spinal cord injury although the mechanism for this action remains unknown. Here, we determined whether deferoxamine was therapeutic in a rat model of spinal cord injury and explored potential mechanisms for this effect. Spinal cord injury was induced by impacting the spinal cord at the thoracic T10 vertebra level...

Anatomy of a Neotropical insect radiation

BACKGROUND Much evolutionary theory predicts that diversity arises via both adaptive radiation (diversification driven by selection against niche-overlap within communities) and divergence of geographically isolated populations. We focus on tropical fruit flies (Blepharoneura, Tephritidae) that reveal unexpected patterns of niche-overlap within local communities. Throughout the Neotropics, mult...

Breeding Phenology of Birds: Mechanisms Underlying Seasonal Declines in the Risk of Nest Predation

Seasonal declines in avian clutch size are well documented, but seasonal variation in other reproductive parameters has received less attention. For example, the probability of complete brood mortality typically explains much of the variation in reproductive success and often varies seasonally, but we know little about the underlying cause of that variation. This oversight is surprising given t...
